Assignment 2 Report
Above, is a prototype for an educational app utilizing AR to connect locations in a map with the fauna present on said location. It can be modified to suit a range of uses, whether it be regional habitat mapping or endangered species locations.
The aforementioned prototype assist classes, particularly animal mapping, as it educates the user by creating a visual connection between a 3d model of an animal and a location on a map with the use of AR technology. Using visual stimuli in this scenario may help reinforce the user’s memory. Additionally, with traditional methods, the user may need to go out to the field and locate each fauna and their habitats, then note them down physically or chart them on a map. This method has several limitations, such as, the student’s location itself limiting the amount of fauna available, and the lack of redundancy in physical objects such as a specific book with notes. Whereas the prototype does not rely on a single unique object and can contain information from anywhere in the world.
The use of AR allows for additional redundancy in the stored information, and removes the limitation on one’s geographical position. While a VR Machine or a Traditional Computer may solve these problems, VR machines are simply too cumbersome to carry around and is not necessarily safe to use outdoors. The same argument follows with traditional computer setups. Moreover, traditional computers operate in a 2D space, further limiting the visual stimuli given to the user. AR, However, allows the prototype to be carried anywhere, as the bare minimum setup would simply consist of a smartphone and a map, both of which are fairly common objects that you could bring with or could find. It also allows for a more tangible visual representation of the information, thus aiding with the user with memorizing them.
While the use of 3D models may be sufficient to create a correlation between fauna and location, there may exist other important information regarding the fauna. In some cases, there may be an enormous amount of information thrown at the user, exceeding their mental capacity of processing information and therefore, reducing their attention and memory. In order to anticipate such cases, the prototype has an interaction mechanism, where a picture of a book, has the ability to change the visualized information. Hence, preventing excess information bandwidth and allowing the user, a much more intuitive experience.
The prototype utilizes Vuforia Engine, an AR development toolkit, and Unity to allow us to create an AR Scene and edit it. To allow for a better-quality stream, an App called DroidCam is used to emulate a smartphone camera into a webcam. The interaction available on the prototype allows us to ‘see’ more information by moving a picture of a book closer to the location of a fauna. Giving us a more tangible and intuitive experience.
BookOpen5, Model used to ascertain the tracked location of the interaction trigger, and to allow intuitive interaction to the user.
Statue Bear Prefab, slightly modified the color to represent a Polar Bear from the Arctic.
Elephant Model, Used to represent an the African Bush Elephant from Africa
SpiderBlack Model, Used to represent various venomous spider from South America
